There's Always Room in the Woodshed

A dear friend of mine, Jim Bearden, has often said, “Sometimes you just have to take yourself to the woodshed.”  Now because I don’t believe in blame or shame especially of ourselves, I understand that this is simply a metaphor for examination of what has happened and how we might consider some course correction.

As if you know me, you know that I am a big proponent of non-attachment….to things, to identities, to thoughts that do not serve our best selves.  Recently I was guilty of attachment to an outcome.  I held on to the notion that something had to be a certain way in order for me to be by best self and to receive approval for a project.  When approval didn’t come, I was beyond annoyed.  Fairly quickly I talked myself down from the lofty position of “being right” and took myself to the proverbial woodshed.  I didn’t punish myself for not doing the project correctly, I had a talk with myself about my attachment to being “right.”  Immediately, a release came and I was ready to make changes to the project.  The result?  Peace within myself leading me to a more creative space and A MUCH better outcome in the project.

Attachment to outcomes was my first error.  Has this ever happened to you?  If so, remember there is always room for one more in the woodshed!
